SINGAPORE: The election of Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, former senior minister of the People’s Action Party, as Singapore’s ninth president has garnered widespread accolades from the leaders of the Progress Singapore Party (PSP).

In a triumphant moment that will be etched in the annals of Singapore’s history, Mr Tharman’s election showcased an impressive win with 70.40% of the votes, as announced by the Election Department (ELD).

Of the total 2,480,760 votes cast by citizens, 1,746,427 were in his favour.

Mr Tharman’s fellow contenders, Mr Ng Kok Song, the former GIC investment chief, received 15.72% (390,041 votes), while Mr Tan Kin Lian, the former NTUC Income chief, secured 13.88 % (344,292 votes).

This announcement came in the early hours of Saturday (2 Sept) by Returning Officer Tan Meng Dui, CEO of the Housing Board.

In response to this, Leong Mun Wai, Secretary-General of the PSP, penned a heartfelt note on Sunday, lauding the new President-elect. “RESPECT FOR ALL, A NEW CHAPTER FOR SINGAPORE. The PSP offers its hearty congratulations to President-elect Tharman Shanmugaratnam.”

“We echo his sentiment of “Respect for all,” and applaud Singaporeans for their discerning vote against racial biases. It is evident that the race-based GRC system and Reserved Presidency no longer resonate with our society. Singaporeans deserve progressive leadership. For Country. For People.”

Dr Tan Cheng Bock, the PSP Chairman who had endorsed Mr Tan Kin Lian during the Presidential Election in his personal capacity, shared a gracious note, “PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2023: My warm congratulations to President-elect Tharman Shanmugaratnam on this significant win.”

“His campaign, rooted in ‘Respect For All’, has clearly found its mark with the electorate. Kudos to candidates Tan Kin Lian and Ng Kok Song for their brave stance. Now, as we step into a new era, the presidential mantle rightfully belongs to a man of Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s integrity and capability. Wishing him unparalleled success as our 9th elected President.”

Lee Hsien Yang, esteemed PSP member and son of the late Lee Kuan Yew, conveyed his wishes, stating, “Hearty congratulations to President-elect Tharman Shanmugaratnam. His representation on the global stage will undoubtedly enhance Singapore’s stature. At home, I trust he will uphold his vow to be an independent voice, placing truth and the nation’s best interest at the forefront. All the best for his term.”

As the nation prepares for this new leadership chapter, the term of the incumbent President, Halimah Yacob, is set to culminate on 13 September 2023.

The alternative parties should really keep their cards close to their chest. Don’t say too much too early. You will never know what can happen. As Murphy’s Law states, anything that can go wrong will go wrong. TCB was way too early to announce his intention to run again in 2017. See how the establishment made him ineligible. Therefore, even though TS’ stumping victory does signify Singaporeans are now race blind, the leaders of alternative parties like LMW should not utter it out openly. It would be better to keep silent on this point now and only say it nearer… Read more »

PSP can just see the effect of NKS and just use the same sales pitch. People actually do not need Track Record. They just believe what they want to believe. Just like that a newbie gets 16%.
It’s time for Opposition to revamp.

From now on the 70% shall approach tharman for help since they voted for him. Let the 70% see for themselves tharman from now on no sound no hear no see.

If no need checks and balance on the reserves as assured, then why need puppets?

Don’ts silliporeans get sick of hearing these words? Unifying, Get a Spine?

Does these really solve bread and butter issues.

Anyway I congratulate you for having a puppet instead of a clown What do you think? tsk tsk tsk

The first step is set wrongly when tkl made this a political election by getting close to opposition to earn votes. He started to talk about Singapore pain point like cost and inflation which is irrelevant and only the gullible will fall into his tactics. He gotten corrected several times and yet he still insisted, going ridiculously to the extent of wanting to change the constitution. Setting for failure and disaster and the result proven so. WP is a smart party and never can enticed and fall into the smelly hole.

Time for pappie stooges to grow a spine.
Time to hang Japanese Lady Photo.
Time to buy a HDB flat ($1000 salary)

Hmmm what else? East Pineapple if Fish is expensive.

Can World Stage Tarzan solve Bread and Butter Issues?

We shall see …………….tsk tsk tsk

The 86.12% (70.4% + 15.72% ) sent a strong signal they do not believe Trust has been eroded but strengthened and they know Reserves Secrecy has a risk but choose to react to it only when the reserves is really bankrupted.

The opposition should have either not endorsed any candidate (WP is very correct and gain my respect more) or give verbal outside suggestion to voters to support NKS (not directly as that would impact his non partisan status). i think opposition sullied their image amongst younger voters (and even older women voters) by endorsing TKL, who is clearly an unacceptable candidate for president (as an ordinary person, he may be ok). it makes people wonder if these opposition are serious people or not. They will need to earn back trust of Singaporeans

Bye Bye

Such a misery planned to spin SC, Such a rigged selection from start. Even the world knew abt it wif “only 1” courtesy congrat fm neighbour……. stil the title wil NOT change, selected press.si.dent

Isn’t that as emphatic as TS victory?

At first I wanted to vote to force Govt to improve on conflict of interest, lack of transparency. Then Majulah Package came. That made me change to vote TM though its the wrong decision as the problems of sg remains.

I am not saying I was bribed. Sg no bribery one. No corruption and no money laundering one.

Good, have some remorse. Acknowledge the mandate and TS is truly the people’s choice. Lead by example and stfu of those who say we don’t have an elected president. Tcb, you should also explain and apologise to the people why you backed and supported a controversial figure. Are you endorsing what he has said and done and claim is right? You have lost trust by embarking this stupid move. I used to have great respect for you and support you but now started to feel otherwise. I believed you are pressured and coerced and last minute decided to take this… Read more »
