During the incident, the ship’s captain, I Made Jana, also known as Ancruk (35), sustained significant burn injuries, affecting 40 per cent of his face, right, and left arms, due to exposure to the fire caused by an explosion.

According to Captain Jana, as reported on the official Klungkung Police Facebook page, an explosion erupted within the Dolphino Queen’s engine compartment at approximately 10.45 am local time, while preparing for a snorkelling expedition.

Captain Jana was tragically caught in the blast, resulting in severe burns.

Following the explosion, the injured captain was promptly transported to Nusa Penida’s Gema Santhi Hospital for immediate medical attention.

Head of Nusa Penida Police, Kompol Ida Bagus Putra Sumerta, alongside fellow officers who were present during the incident, collaborated with local community members and the Nusa Penida Koramil 1610-04 division of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) to successfully extinguish the fire by 11.30 am.

In addition to the ship itself, various equipment aboard the Dolphino Queen was also consumed by the flames, including two Yamaha 100 PK engines and snorkelling gear.

The estimated total value of the damages is around 650 million IDR (US$42,819).

Preliminary indications suggest a potential short circuit in the ship’s electrical system may have triggered the fire.

However, an ongoing investigation is actively underway to ascertain the precise cause behind this unfortunate incident.
