Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar extends warm wishes to Tharman Shanmugaratnam on decisive presidential win
Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, congratulates Tharman Shanmugaratnam on his commanding victory in Singapore’s Presidential Election, emphasizing hopes for continued bilateral ties and prosperity for Singapore under the new leadership.
Following Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s resounding victory in Singapore’s Presidential Election, Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, was among the first international leaders to congratulate the former senior minister of the People’s Action Party (PAP).
Tharman garnered an impressive 70.4% of the total votes on Friday, September 1.
Mr Anwar took to Facebook on Sunday to convey his sentiments, writing, “Congratulations to former Singapore Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam who has won the Presidential election of the Republic of Singapore on September 1, 2023.”
Emphasizing the close ties between the neighbouring nations, the Malaysian Prime Minister expressed his hopes for sustained bilateral cooperation.
“Praying that the bilateral relationship and cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore continue to be intact in the spirit of family that is able to benefit the people of both countries,” he added.
Mr Anwar concluded with a positive outlook for Singapore, “hoping Singapore continues to prosper under his leadership.”
The electoral results showed Ng Kok Song, former chief investment officer of GIC, with 15.72% and Tan Kin Lian, former chief of NTUC Income, securing 13.88% of the votes.
