SINGAPORE: In a heartwarming display of camaraderie, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore celebrated Malaysia’s 66th Merdeka Day by exchanging birthday cakes with their Malaysian counterparts.

For the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), this tradition is alive and well, as they recently shared a sweet moment with their Malaysian counterparts in honour of Malaysia’s Independence Day.

The spirit of cake exchange wasn’t limited to Merdeka Day alone

Earlier on 9 August this year, a Facebook post by UKK BSI showcased Mrs. Vimala, Deputy Chief of Immigration at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI), presenting a cake to Deputy Commander Woodlands Tong Weijie at the Woodlands checkpoint, in celebration of Singapore’s 58th National Day.

This cake, adorned with Singapore’s flag, iconic landmarks, and decorative red frosting with gold stars, added a touch of festivity to the occasion.

Commemorating Malaysia’s Merdeka Day

Merdeka Day is Malaysia’s Independence Day, commemorating independence from the British Empire.

“Merdeka” in Bahasa Melayu means “independent” or “free,” and Malaysia has celebrated this “independence” from the British every 31 August since 1957.
