SINGAPORE: A 40-year-old Bangladeshi construction worker tragically lost his life after being struck by a steel frame at a worksite in Pioneer.

The incident occurred at 14 Benoi Sector on 16 August at 4 p.m. during a crane lifting operation.

The details were initially shared on the Facebook page Safety Watch – SG, which reported the unfortunate loss of the signalman’s life.

According to Chinese media 8World News, the worker was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic, as confirmed by a Ministry of Manpower (MOM) spokesperson in response to media inquiries.

The worksite occupier is SH Design & Build, while the worker’s employer is Range Construction.

The project developer is TL Development (WG2) Pte Ltd. All three companies are incorporated in Singapore.

The police and Singapore Civil Defence Force were alerted to the accident at approximately 4:50 p.m.

The police have indicated that there is no suspicion of foul play based on preliminary investigations.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) is investigating the incident and has directed the worksite occupier to halt all lifting activities on the premises.

“As a general safety measure, all lifting operations must be carried out in accordance with established lifting plans,” said the MOM spokesperson, adding that loads must not be lifted over people.

Second Fatal Incident in Three Weeks

The incident follows a workplace accident on 29 July, where a 42-year-old Bangladeshi worker in Jurong lost his life.

He suffered head injuries after being struck by an iron pipe that fell from the fifth floor of a building under construction.

Despite being taken to the hospital, his condition deteriorated, and he passed away three days later.

On 13 July, a 30-year-old construction worker at Changi Airport was killed when a broken component hit him while he was operating a skid-steer loader.

This was reported as the third workplace fatality at the Changi East project.

According to the Ministry of Manpower’s latest annual workplace safety and health report, there were 36 workplace fatalities in 2023, with 18 of these occurring in the construction sector.

Most of the worksite deaths are, in my view, very preventable. It just takes a determined mindset starting from the head ie CEO/Chairman/General Manager/Managing Director to set the tone. When a death occurs and is investigated, penalties should be meted out to the head and the company itself too. And financial penalties should be levied with a minimum of $100k. This sum should be awarded to the family of the deceased separate from any insurance or workman compensation. No company will really bother about safety unless the head is held accountable and the company made to pay penalties. Yes, they… Read more »

@Kenny
I am directing these questions to you since you are running wild like a turkey.

1. Guess how much the poor chap and his family gets for that steel stucked in his brain?

2. How much he earned monthly to get that steel frame jackpot?

3. How many hours he had to clock for a job in Singapore as work permit worker?

4. And the condition of living to paid for with his low salary and perhaps still owed the agents $$$ for getting him this steel striking job!

What strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, burberry you are talking about?

A job no local wants to do.
See!…fhe PAP can use this everytime to screw you Sinkie.
So you locals CANNOT COMPLAIN!
No wonder you locals deserved to be delegated to doing only food delivery and PHV!
CECA FTs laughing like mad from his condo balcony when he reads this!
Cannot really blame the FTs, cos you locals ASKED FOR IT!😆😆😆😆😆🤣🤣🤣🤣

Sad

RIP

Very simple, just punish the lifting team, supervisors,
In otherwords, its always the rank & file who does all the work
gets to attend refresher courses.

Management just sends out circulars, reminders etc.
They create standard operating procedures and believes that is
their role. Nothing more required.

The belief also stems from insurance requirements.

There is a better way
Just move costs further down the list.
Move safety up.
Move human factors like rest up
Move better design in equipment up
Move time further down too.

Good cannot be cheap
Cheap cannot be good

The worker’s immediate supervisor, and, up to senior management levels to GM or MD tiers, NEED to be called up, PUNISHED COMPREHENSIVELY and BAR from future tenders.

This accident SHOW these people DEMONSTRATE blind eyes when VALUABLE LIVES of cheap labourers are at stake.

Is this due to cheap inexperienced labour or failure in implementing safety protocols? Please ensure that the family is compensated adequately ASAP. MOM must ensure that the workers are protected by strict regulation on all sites.

The CRUCIAL ISSUE the PAP Administration has to answer and ACCOUNT unequivocally :

1.Cheap worker or skilled worker – which is which the PAP Administration prioritise?

2. Are human lives sacred or dispensable with compensation of money – which they seems to do with the 1001 acts of money politics so far (to buy votes).
