SINGAPORE: A window fell from a height of three storeys and shattered on the walkway in Ang Mo Kio Central on Saturday (13 July), with no injuries reported.

The incident took place outside a DBS branch, causing the area to be cordoned off for safety reasons.

A netizen shared photos of the fallen window frame and shattered glass on the ground, as well as the spot from where it had fallen.

The netizen mentioned that they noticed the fallen window at around 4 PM.

Ang Mo Kio Town Council was promptly informed of the incident.

Speaking to Stomp, a spokesperson from Ang Mo Kio Town Council confirmed their awareness of the situation at Block 712A Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 and expressed relief that no one was injured.

“We are relieved that no injuries were reported following the incident,” said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson added, “We have promptly referred the matter to the Housing Board for further investigation and necessary action.”

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) recorded 35 cases of fallen windows in the first 11 months of 2023.

Of these, more than half, or 19 cases, involved casement windows.

The remaining 15 cases were related to fallen sliding windows, with one case involving louvre windows.

There were no reported injuries in any of these incidents.

It is noted that windows may detach and fall when their parts become loose or defective over time due to wear and tear.

To prevent such incidents, homeowners and occupiers are advised to check their windows at least once every six months.

In Singapore, if a window falls due to lack of maintenance, the homeowner can face serious consequences, including a fine of up to S$10,000 (US$7,444), imprisonment for up to one year, or both.

Since 2006, the BCA has fined 406 individuals and prosecuted 94 people for fallen windows.

This regulation underscores the importance of regular maintenance to ensure the safety and integrity of window installations in residential and commercial buildings.
