UNITED STATES: On 15 July, former United States President Donald Trump announced his selection of Senator James David Vance, a Republican from Ohio, as his vice-presidential running mate.

The announcement, made via Trump’s Truth Social media platform, came at the outset of the four-day Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where the party will nominate its presidential ticket.

Mr Vance, author of the bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” has seen a meteoric rise in the Republican Party.

Despite his previous sharp criticism of Trump, he has emerged as one of Trump’s most loyal supporters. This selection aims to galvanize Trump’s base for the upcoming 5 November election, given Vance’s popularity among core supporters.

However, Mr Vance’s strong conservative stance may not attract new voters and could potentially alienate moderates. Some Trump supporters had advocated for a more diverse choice for the vice-presidential candidate to broaden the appeal beyond the predominantly white male coalition.

The announcement followed a dramatic incident at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on 13 July, where Trump survived an assassination attempt. The assailant’s motives remain unclear.

Prominent Trump backers, including former senior adviser Steve Bannon and Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, have lauded Mr Vance for his advocacy of a more isolationist foreign policy and support for trade barriers. Vance’s confrontational presence on social media has also resonated with Trump’s supporters, contrasting the typically reserved demeanor of many senators.

At 39, Mr Vance represents a younger generation in an election that features two senior candidates: Trump, 78, and President Joe Biden, 81. This dynamic could provide a counterbalance to the Democratic ticket, which includes Vice-President Kamala Harris, 59.

Trump’s decision to choose Vance over other potential candidates, including senators Marco Rubio and Tim Scott, as well as North Dakota governor Doug Burgum, has stirred mixed reactions. Some within Trump’s circle preferred a candidate who could enhance diversity on the ticket.

Mr Vance’s political ascent is notable. After a challenging childhood in southern Ohio, he served in the Marine Corps, attended Yale Law School, and worked as a venture capitalist. His memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” brought him national attention for its exploration of the struggles in rural America and its connection to Trump’s rise.

Though initially a harsh critic of Trump, Mr Vance shifted his stance as he prepared for his 2022 Senate run in Ohio, becoming a staunch Trump defender. He has downplayed the severity of the 6 January Capitol attack and echoed Trump’s criticisms of the Justice Department’s handling of rioters.

In foreign policy, Vance aligns with Trump’s unconventional stance, opposing continued aid to Ukraine, which contrasts with many Republican leaders. On the campaign trail, he has acted as a link between Trump’s team and Silicon Valley donors, securing substantial financial backing for the campaign.

Despite the enthusiasm from some quarters, Vance’s selection has its critics. Some Trump associates had hoped for a vice-presidential pick that would appeal to a broader electorate. Trump’s lag in national polls among women and black Americans raises concerns about the ticket’s overall appeal.

Additionally, there are strategic concerns about removing Vance from the Senate during a tightly contested battle for control. Democrats currently hold a one-seat advantage, but this is likely to change in the upcoming election. While Ohio is a Republican stronghold in presidential races, it occasionally leans Democratic in other elections. Vance’s 2022 Senate victory was by a modest six-point margin.

As the campaign progresses, the effectiveness of Trump’s choice of J.D. Vance as his running mate will become clearer in the context of an increasingly polarized American political landscape.
