Singapore’s political horizon is alight with anticipation, with three candidates stepping forward for the ninth elected presidency.

Former GIC investment chief, Mr Ng Kok Song, 75, former People’s Action Party senior minister, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, 66, and former NTUC Income chief, Mr Tan Kin Lian, 75, successfully filed their nomination papers on Tuesday before the noon deadline.

This was announced by the Returning Officer, Mr Tan Meng Dui, at the nomination centre located in the People’s Association headquarters in Jalan Besar.

In his acceptance speech post-nomination, Mr Tan wasted no time in clarifying his presidential vision at the People’s Association headquarters.

He spoke fervently of his determination to harness the President’s Office authority for the betterment of Singaporeans.

“I offer the people of Singapore the opportunity to vote for a president who stands independently from the ruling government,” he emphasized.

Mr Tan pledged to fulfill his presidential duties diligently, honestly, and to the utmost of his abilities, highlighting the safeguarding of Singapore’s reserves and maintaining the integrity of public service.

“I seek your support to serve the people to the best of my ability,” he urged.

Despite aiming to connect with voters in multiple languages, his speech faced a minor hiccup; the Malay segment of his address was cut short due to the strict two-minute time allocation.

Mr Tan was accompanied by his family. His wife, children, and grandchildren stood proudly by his side at the nomination centre.

With the official confirmation of the three candidates, the path is now set for an intense campaign as they vie for Singapore’s presidency.

The eagerly awaited polling day is scheduled for 1 September, designated as a public holiday.

Unless Mr Tharman decides to do something drastic to change my opinion of him as a puppet of the incumbent party, I know who will be getting my vote. Let us hope that Mr Tan Kin Lian is one to keep his word. Well, not like he could do worse than the current president.
The bar is so low that it is already in the basement.

❤ Election: 1. We do not get to Choose candidates to step forward to run for election. They choose themselves. 2. So we only get to make use of the Voting to express our stand. 3. Vote to show A. disapproval of excessive Elitism B. Reserves Secretcy which allows future gov turned rogue to Hide all major losses from the Trusting People. Secretcy policy allows fastest way to bankrupt the reserves. C. Vote against candidates that are friends of the 1st Key holder which defeats the purpose of 2-key system. D. Vote to stop Further Erosion of Good Governance. Use… Read more »

Just vote for tan kin lian who may be the least of pap-leaning sycophants. The other 2 are merely well rewarded pap lackeys who will toe the pap regime line. Wasn’t ng kok song the CIO of gic during the 2008 global financial crisis who was mainly responsible for throwing away some 60 billions bucks into UBS and citigroup, and even doubling down and dumping more of our money after UBS and citigroup went under? ng even claim UBS and citigroup ill investments were for the long term – so why dump all those “long term” investments soon afterwards, realising… Read more »

Will vote for you Mr. Tan. Please delete all the 10years of photography from your social media accounts immediately as there should be no distractions to the EP.

I may not like any of the 3, but I will vote Tan K L to show l have enough of PAP.

Voting Tan K L also encourage others from the private sectors to step forward as candidates in future.

I don’t like the situation like Halimah’s with no other Malay capable to be President. Ended up with an Indian masqueraded as a Malay President. That was an International joke!

❤ I don’t care about any of the candidates. We do not get to choose who to step forward to contest. Candidates do that themselves.

We only get to cast a vote. *I vote simply for these purposes* :

1. Show my disapproval for Reserves Secretcy.
Opacity and lack of Accountability.

2. Displeasure of Elitism.

3. Disapproval of candidates perceivably linked to establishment and lacking independence.

I am only using it as a Referendum. So I am just using the candidate name to show my displeasure.

I vote as a referendum. I don’t vote the candidate because none of them impressed me.

Some may choose not to vote but I prefer not to cross 2 boxes to spoil a vote. I will vote the candidate to show my displeasure of the Reserves Secretcy and dislike for Elitism.
