Malaysian police said they are investigating an unidentified woman accused of pushing a two-year-old boy to the ground and hitting his seven-year-old sister on the back of the head at a shopping centre in Kuala Lumpur, the capital, on Sunday. A video of the confrontation that followed has spread widely online.

The children’s 36-year-old father filed a police report at 7.39 pm, several hours after the incident at about 3 pm, according to Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Azwan Amin Nordin.

Children attacked from behind, police say

In a statement issued that night, Ahmad Azwan said the father had been walking with his two children when the woman approached them without warning.

“Suddenly, an unknown woman pushed his son from behind, causing him to fall, and hit his daughter on the back of the head,” he said, according to the New Straits Times.

The complainant reported that the woman “had suddenly shoved his son from behind, causing him to fall, while he was walking with his two children”.

The woman’s identity and motive have not been disclosed.

Viral footage draws public anger

The case drew public attention after a 35-second video was widely shared on social media. Police said they had come across the clip and also received the father’s report.

The footage shows a heated exchange between the children’s father and a woman, including pushing and slapping, The Vibes reported. It does not show what started the altercation.

The New Straits Times said the video provoked widespread anger among social media users. Concern has been particularly strong because two young children were allegedly involved.

Social media user alleges wider assault

A woman identified as Sakina Zuhairi later posted on social media that her friend, who was wearing a maroon headscarf, was also attacked.

Sakina said the two were walking towards Don Kai, an outlet at Ombak KLCC, when a woman dressed in yellow allegedly approached and slapped her friend.

She said the same woman had earlier pushed a young boy standing near his father. When the father confronted her, the woman allegedly pushed the child’s head, and he fell from his stroller.

According to Sakina, the situation then escalated. She said the woman allegedly pushed and kicked the father before slapping her friend.

Police have not confirmed these further allegations. Social media posts have named Ombak KLCC as the location, but Ahmad Azwan’s statement did not name the shopping centre.

Ahmad Azwan said police were treating the case seriously. He said a thorough investigation was under way to establish the circumstances and the real cause of the incident.

He also urged the public not to speculate, make unverified accusations or spread misleading information that could hamper the investigation.
