Former Malaysian independent election candidate arrested over alleged assault on elderly woman
A former independent candidate in Malaysia’s 15th General Election has been arrested after allegedly pushing a 79-year-old former Selangor hockey player into a drain in Taman OUG, Kuala Lumpur. Police said the incident was captured on CCTV and are investigating the case under Section 325 of the Penal Code.
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: A former independent candidate in Malaysia’s 15th General Election has been arrested after allegedly pushing a 79-year-old eoman into a drain in Kuala Lumpur on 18 September.
The incident happened at about 10.30am outside a row of shops in Taman OUG, with the elderly woman suffering injuries to the back of her head, left hand and back.
Elderly woman allegedly pushed into drain
According to Berita Harian, Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook said preliminary investigations found that the woman had entered her friend’s tailoring shop after telling the friend that she was being followed by the suspect.
When she left the premises several minutes later, the woman was allegedly waiting outside and suddenly pushed her, causing her to fall into a drain.
The incident was captured by closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the shop, police said.
The victim’s friend lodged a police report at about 12.37pm on the same day.
Police from the Brickfields district criminal investigation division subsequently raided a house and arrested the woman.
Police say suspect denied pushing woman
Hoo said the woman denied pushing the victim during initial questioning and was unable to provide what police considered a reasonable explanation for her alleged actions.
Police also found that she did not personally know the victim, according to the statement.
The woman was remanded for one day at the Brickfields district police headquarters.
A magistrate also ordered her to undergo psychiatric assessment and treatment to assist the investigation.
Victim treated in hospital
The 79-year-old woman, who was a former Selangor hockey player during the 1960s, was taken to University Malaya Medical Centre by her friend.
She remained in the emergency ward for four days for further treatment before being discharged on 21 September.
Police are investigating the case under Section 325 of Malaysia’s Penal Code, which concerns voluntarily causing grievous hurt.
Hoo said police were awaiting a full medical report from specialists before referring the investigation papers to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further instructions on possible charges.
