A dispute over a parking space in Indonesia escalated into a heated confrontation on Sunday after a woman allegedly stood in an empty space to reserve it for her car, according to a post on Threads.

The incident was recorded on camera and later shared by Threads user @radityarusydi, who said the confrontation had left him concerned about the impact on children who were present.

According to his account, a parking attendant directed him towards a vacant space. After he turned into the lane, he found a woman standing in the space even though her car had not arrived.

He approached the parking attendant and asked, “You called me over and said there was an empty space. Why is it being reserved like this?”

The woman, he said, replied, “I’m reserving this space. My car has already gone around once, so what’s wrong with me reserving it?”

The poster said he believed a parking space should not be held by a person while their vehicle was still looking for access, particularly because the parking area was crowded and other vehicles were waiting.

Argument escalates

He said he and his two older siblings then questioned the woman about the practice, which he described as a matter of etiquette rather than whether it was specifically prohibited by law.

The exchange developed into an argument after one of his sisters became upset by what he described as the woman's manner of speaking and gestures.

The man said he eventually decided to give way and look for another parking space, believing the dispute was over.

It was not, according to his account.

He said the woman and her husband later approached the group and that the husband asked, “Who shouted at my wife?”

The poster said he replied, “Nobody shouted at her. We only reprimanded her because what she did was wrong.”

He said the man continued questioning the group, including: “Who is the parking attendant taking sides with?”, “Who is he siding with?”, “Is there actually a law saying you cannot reserve a parking space?” and “Who shouted at my wife?”

The poster said the issue was not whether there was a specific rule prohibiting someone from reserving a parking space.

“There are many things that may NOT BE WRITTEN AS A LAW, but there are still standards of ETIQUETTE and PROPRIETY,” he wrote.

According to the post, the confrontation then intensified, with the woman's husband allegedly removing his shirt and challenging the group to fight.

Children were present during confrontation

The poster said the couple's child had already been taken away from the scene by a babysitter, but two of his nieces and nephews were still nearby.

His seven-month-old nephew was being carried by his father and was nearly caught in the middle of the confrontation, he said.

His six-year-old nephew was being held by him and became frightened and cried as the situation grew increasingly tense.

The poster said the six-year-old remained distressed for some time after the incident.

He added that relatives and people working in psychology had suggested that the family pay closer attention to the child's condition and consider consulting a child psychologist if necessary.

He stressed that this was not a diagnosis of trauma.

“That does not mean we can immediately say he is traumatised. I am not a psychologist and I do not want to make an unfounded diagnosis. But a child's mental wellbeing is important,” he wrote.

Poster says incident went beyond parking dispute

The man said the incident continued to trouble him because he believed it had moved far beyond the original disagreement over a parking space.

He said he had already chosen to give way and find another space, but the confrontation continued and nearly became physical.

“For me, this is no longer about who is right or who wins in a parking dispute. As adults, and especially as people who already have children, we should think before acting, particularly in a crowded place where children are present,” he wrote.

He said adults might be able to return home, sleep and forget an incident, while children might process such an experience differently.

The poster said he shared the incident not to seek attention or validation, but because he remained concerned about its impact on his nephew and other children who were present.

He later asked people not to involve unrelated matters, such as employment, saying his intention was to discourage similar incidents and remind adults to act appropriately.

“My original purpose in making this post was to prevent something similar from happening and to remind people to act as adults should,” he wrote.

He also thanked people for their prayers, messages and encouragement for him and his family, particularly his nieces and nephews.
