A 44-year-old woman allegedly attempted to take her own life by jumping from a bridge in Indonesia's Central Java province on Wednesday, but was pulled to safety by a bystander before she could jump, police said.

The incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. local time on Surobayan Bridge in Kedungwuni district, Pekalongan Regency.

Videos circulating on social media showed the woman standing on the edge of the bridge before a man ran towards her and pulled her away from the ledge. She lost consciousness shortly afterwards and was taken by officers from Kedungwuni Police to RSI Pekajangan Hospital for medical treatment.

Police cite suspected psychological distress

Police identified the woman only by her initial, K, aged 44, from Rengas village in Kedungwuni district.

According to Pekalongan Police, preliminary inquiries found that she was believed to have been experiencing psychological distress after her husband remarried. Police said she had frequently suffered from stress since then and had on several occasions left home at night with her child without a clear destination.

Bystanders intervened before police arrived

According to a police press release, the incident began when a parking attendant identified as Rohadi noticed the woman standing on the edge of the bridge and alerted another bystander, identified as Fada.

Fada immediately ran towards her and pulled her away from the bridge, preventing what police described as an alleged suicide attempt.

Officers later arrived at the scene, evacuated the woman to hospital, interviewed witnesses and coordinated with village authorities to verify her identity and circumstances.

"We appreciate and thank the residents who acted quickly to save the victim. Kedungwuni Police immediately evacuated her to hospital, interviewed witnesses and coordinated with the village administration and her family," Kedungwuni Police chief Inspector Amin said.

Police said the woman remained under medical care while officers continued coordinating with her family and local authorities to ensure she received appropriate support and follow-up care.
