An allegation has surfaced against Hun Ming Kwang, a self-proclaimed “International Coaching Federation (ICF) certified Professional Life Coach” from Singapore.

A Redditor shared a traumatic experience, claiming he spent his life savings and accrued S$100,000 in bank debt due to a “manipulative and abusive” course organized by Hun.

Gutzy has written to Mr Hun regarding the allegation and will include his comments once a reply is received.

The Redditor’s ordeal

The Redditor, known by the account name “RebornAnewJ,” shared his ordeal in a lengthy post on July 26.

He noted that in early 2023, he was initially invited to a mental health event, drawn in by his passion for mental health and personal experiences with depression.

After attending the event and socializing with volunteers, the Redditor was convinced to join courses offered by 31-year-old Hun Ming Kwang, the founder.

He participated in several courses, including two initial Zoom classes costing S$3,000 and two more intense physical classes costing S$10,000.

He spent around S$20,000 over two months on these classes, explaining that, at the time, he thought the courses were helpful and he still had significant savings left.

After completing the physical classes and Zoom sessions, he was invited to a one-on-one session called “DNA” work with Hun and was also asked to volunteer for This.Connect.today, a community platform for promotes emotional literacy, self-awareness, and mindfulness via experiential art and conversations.

Allegedly convinced to purchase a crystal skull as a gift

The Redditor alleged that Hun used various psychological tactics to brainwash participants.

For instance, he was encouraged to buy expensive gifts, such as a crystal skull related to “your higher self,” for Hun. He was further convinced that “loans are a good thing” and was encouraged to take out loans.

“Each time he find me getting back my senses of having my thoughts, he will “Educate” me and charge me his prorated US$2,500 hourly rate and he kept gaslighting me to pay for everything.”

The Redditor alleged that Hun consistently gaslighted him into paying for everything, including  S$600 fee for “volunteering” under the pretext of logistics.

He discovered that events were staged to attract recruits for Hun’s classes.

Volunteers were pressured to meet KPIs, with penalties for failing to recruit enough new members. They were paired with other volunteers to convince event attendees to join the courses.

Volunteers in the group allegedly had to take leaves from work to commit to the group’s schedule, often working from 3 pm to 6 am. Events ran late into the night, followed by disciplinary group discussions aimed at enforcing conformity.

After being involved for 4-6 months, the Redditor was helped by a close friend and family to recognize the manipulation and leave the organization.

” I was worried because I signed an “agreement” over a class that i have to commit over a year and pay (S$)686 per class or pay 15% more even if I “Drop out”,” he added.

Financial losses and bank debt

Thankfully, the Redditor quit and recounted that he spent S$150,000 in total on Hun’s organization.

He noted that he also reached out to other ex-members and discovered that many people had also been exploited.

According to him, Victims commonly incurred financial losses ranging from S$50,000 to S$100,000 and fell into significant bank debt.

“The worst part is that till today they are still out there with many of his followers still follow him and some even was with him for up to 7 years!.”

The Redditor observed that many victims came from unsupportive family backgrounds and criticised Hun for positioning himself as a helper to these vulnerable individuals, only to manipulate them into becoming his volunteers and further indebting them.

The Redditor made a police report, gathered information, and created a support group to spread awareness about the organization’s practices.

Despite these efforts, little progress was made due to the largely verbal nature of the abuse, which complicated legal action.

Notably, there are also other Reddit comments sharing negative experience with Hun “mental health” event, labelling Hun’s organisation as “cult-like” preying on vulnerable people to sell courses.

A Reddit account identified himself as TikToker Kevin Wee from Radical Kindness, recounted feeling manipulated and dismissed by the organization’s representatives, who allegedly aggressively pushed expensive courses on him under the guise of mental health support.

A check on Hun’s LinkedIn account, Hun boasting that as “a globally recognized inner work teacher, social healer, creative, and professional life coach, I’ve trained and helped over 10,000 individuals, including C suite leaders and politicians, to transform and attain a higher level of awareness to manifest their purpose.”

However, upon checking the official ICF website to verify Mr Hun’s accreditation, his name was not found in the system.

According to the ICF, to be an ICF coach, an individual must complete at least 60 hours of coach-specific training and pledge to abide by the ICF Code of Ethics.

The organization also notes that only ICF members in good standing may market themselves as such and use the ICF logo on their marketing materials.

A search of the ICF Singapore chapter website‘s directory also does not list Mr Hun.

DNA healing, Tarot and “Crystal Skull School”

Certainly life improvement are just part of Mr Hun’s teaching, checking on his website, his business provide variety of course or program, including “soul work”, “DNA healing”, “creative coaching” and etc.

For instance, a “Limited Edition” of Universal Sight Tarot deck by Mr Hun himself, put up on sale for S$3,888 on Mr Hun’s website.

Hun’s website also promoting “Crystal Skull School” from United States where the school offers courses and seminars that focus on the powers of crystal skulls, esoteric practices, mystic healing, and self-awareness, aims to help individuals “improve their sense of consciousness, energy, and power to heal.”

“Healer and teacher” of PAP MP Carrie Tan

In 2021, Mr Hun was featured in an interview with Singapore’s state media, The Straits Times, where he discussed founding ThisConnect.today to promote mental health awareness and suicide prevention following a friend’s suicide in 2019.

In the interview, he expressed his intention to counteract the dehumanizing effects of the rat race, which he felt turned people into “zombies.”

The ST also promoted Hun’s event and exhibition, as well as his book “Threading Worlds: Conversations On Mental Health,” which includes discussions with 72 individuals, such as doctors, psychotherapists, social workers, politicians, and those seeking mental health support.

Notably, in a 2022 interview with the SouthEast Asia Globe, Carrie Tan, Member of the Singapore Parliament for Nee Soon GRC, praised Mr Hun for his role as her “healer and teacher,” mentioning that she brought him to Seoul to conduct workshops on self-awareness, personal healing, and transformation.

Past Allegations in 2023

In June 2023, Mr Hun made a lengthy statement on LinkedIn, addressing allegations against him and ThisConnect, criticizing those who label the organization as a cult without verifying facts or attending events.

He asserted that the organization neither offers courses or programs nor discriminates against anyone and defended his businesses, stating they operate with full transparency and there is no coercion in selling courses.

“It is not my place to meddle with how much people have in their bank accounts, much less to tell them what to do with their money – not unless they approach me for advice from a line of relationship. Students who had studied with me around the world and worked with me directly can testify to that and vouch for my character.”

“Besides, it takes two hands to clap – a willing client and a willing service provider. People pay for what they find value in and the courses I offer in my companies are priced with full transparency.”

He further alleged that one individual who made accusations against him attended his courses, requested partial payments, and then disappeared without paying the owed money.

He claimed another person ignored his advice to find honourable ways to earn an income and instead spread untruths, damaging relationships among members. Mr Hun also mentioned that legal actions were being taken against these individuals for breaching agreements.

He highlighted the positive experiences and testimonials from respected individuals who have participated in ThisConnect’s activities. Additionally, he condemned the “toxic cancel culture” and called for self-reflection among critics before passing judgment on others.

The public needs to be aware of this and what is happening, stuff like having to pay to volunteer and to be pressured and manipulated, when it could just stem from a random encounter at mental health events are supposed to provide a “safe space” for those who may already be vulnerable
