TAIWAN: A 43-year-old American national who teaches at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) was arrested on 14 July after allegedly fatally stabbing his brother-in-law at a musical instrument store in Hsinchu City.

According to Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA), the incident occurred at a store on Sanmin Road.

Police received a report at 2.46pm that a man was attacking another person with a knife.

When officers from the Hsinchu City Police Bureau's Second Precinct arrived, they found the store owner, identified by the surname Chi, lying in a pool of blood.

The suspect, identified by the surname Lin, was reportedly still holding a knife.

Police confront suspect

According to police, Lin repeatedly confronted responding officers and refused to surrender his weapon.

Authorities also discovered 10 people inside the store — six adults and four children — who were unable to leave during the incident.

Police said officers used legally authorised force after the suspect failed to comply with instructions.

Four shots were fired, striking Lin in the leg before he was taken into custody and transported to hospital.

Victim pronounced dead

Medical personnel who entered the store found that Chi had no vital signs.

He was later pronounced dead. Prosecutors subsequently ordered an autopsy, though the results were not immediately available.

According to CNA, Chi owned the musical instrument store where the incident took place.

Family connection revealed

A source in Hsinchu City told CNA that Lin teaches in NYCU's Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering and specialises in semiconductor engineering and electronic components.

The source said Lin was originally from Taiwan but later became a United States citizen.

According to the same source, Lin is married to the sister of Chi's wife, making the victim his brother-in-law.

Investigation ongoing

Police have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the killing and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities have not disclosed what may have led to the confrontation.

In a statement cited by CNA, NYCU said it would fully cooperate with prosecutors and police as investigations continue.

The case remains under investigation.
