Three former Malaysian PMs appear in court in unprecedented same-day legal convergence

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: Three former Malaysian prime ministers appeared at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex on 27 August 2026, with Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob each facing separate legal proceedings.

The simultaneous appearances marked an unprecedented moment in Malaysia’s political history, bringing three former occupants of the prime minister’s office to the same court complex while they faced separate cases.

The proceedings concern allegations and legal claims involving financial misconduct, corruption and the declaration of assets, although none of the three former prime ministers is accused of involvement in the other proceedings.

Najib faces 1MDB civil suit

Najib, Malaysia’s sixth prime minister, was due before the High Court for the continuation of a multibillion-ringgit civil suit filed by 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) against him and several other defendants.

The proceedings before Judicial Commissioner Mohamad Redzuan Idrus were expected to continue with evidence concerning transactions and decisions at the centre of the 1MDB controversy.

1MDB is seeking billions of ringgit in damages from Najib, the former Pekan MP, and other defendants over losses allegedly suffered by the sovereign wealth fund.

The civil proceedings form part of the extensive legal fallout surrounding 1MDB, which has involved allegations concerning the management and movement of funds connected to the state-owned investment vehicle.

Muhyiddin's Jana Wibawa trial

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin, Malaysia’s eighth prime minister and leader of the opposition party,

The Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU), was scheduled to continue his trial over seven charges linked to the Jana Wibawa government programme.

He faces four charges of using his position to obtain RM232.5 million (approximately US$57.72 million) in bribes for the party.

He also faces three money-laundering charges involving RM200 million.

The trial has included testimony concerning projects, payments and companies allegedly linked to the Jana Wibawa programme.

The case involving the Pagoh MP is being heard before Special Corruption Court Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin.

The charges against Muhyiddin remain matters before the court, with the trial continuing as evidence and testimony are heard.

Ismail Sabri faces latest legal development

Ismail Sabri, Malaysia’s ninth prime minister, was also expected at the Kuala Lumpur High Court to face graft-related proceedings.

The Bera MP was expected to face a charge under Section 36(2) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 concerning an alleged failure to declare assets as required by the anti-graft agency.

His prosecution had previously been scheduled for 7 August 2026 but was postponed after he was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) for medical treatment.

Ismail Sabri subsequently underwent a procedure to have a pacemaker fitted.

Dozens of people were present at the Jalan Duta court complex to show their support for Ismail Sabri, the former Umno vice-president who served as prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022.

Cash and gold seizures disclosed

Ismail Sabri’s case has attracted heightened attention following the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) disclosure that investigators seized about RM170 million (approximately US$42.2 million) in cash in various foreign currencies.

Investigators also seized 16kg of gold bullion estimated to be worth RM7 million.

The seizures were made during investigations involving several of Ismail Sabri’s former senior officers.

The asset declaration proceedings therefore represent the latest legal development involving the former prime minister, whose appearance had been delayed following his medical treatment.
