An Australian man has been arrested at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport on suspicion of murdering a 17-year-old Thai girl, whose naked body was found stuffed inside a suitcase beside a railway line near Pattaya.
Simon Peter Carman, 46, from Ballarat, Victoria, was detained by immigration officers at approximately 9.30pm on Friday as he prepared to board a flight to Perth — reportedly just minutes before departure. He has been transferred to Pattaya City Police Station for questioning.
The victim, Tunchanok Donhomla, known to friends as "Nong Cake," was from Kalasin province. She was 17 years old.
What CCTV showed
According to Police Colonel Anek Sarathongyu, Superintendent of Pattaya City Police Station, investigators traced the sequence of events through surveillance footage. The footage shows Tunchanok entering a condominium on Jomtien Beach alongside Carman at around 3.30am on Thursday, 26 June, the pair holding hands as they stepped into a lift. She was not seen leaving.
Later that same evening, at approximately 9.30pm, Carman is seen on CCTV leaving the building alone, pulling a large black suitcase. Footage then shows him loading the luggage onto the back of a motorcycle before riding to a forested area near a road running alongside a railway line in Nong Prue subdistrict, Banglamung, Chonburi. Police say he returned to the condominium afterward to collect his belongings before heading to Bangkok.
Tunchanok was reported missing to Pattaya police by a 19-year-old friend at around 11am on Friday. The friend told investigators the pair had been together on Jomtien Beach near Soi 7 in the early hours of Thursday morning before Tunchanok left with a foreign man.

Body found
At around 11pm Friday, officers acting on information extracted from Carman during initial questioning located a black 29-inch wheeled suitcase in undergrowth beside Chaiyaphruek Road. Inside, they found the body of Tunchanok, naked and bent double.
She had tattoos on her back, arms, chest and left leg, and was wearing a gold bracelet and necklace — consistent with her appearance on CCTV footage. Also inside the suitcase were her clothing — a red T-shirt, jeans, underwear, a green towel, a phone case, a brown wallet and white shoes.
Colonel Sarathongyu said: "The victim's face showed signs of severe assault, with swelling and bruising covering the entire face, and blood flowing from her mouth and nose."
Forensic teams have been deployed to examine the room, the motorcycle used to transport the suitcase, and the suspect's body.
Suspect's account
Speaking to reporters at the police station, Carman apologised to the victim's family but denied intent to kill. He claimed he had met Tunchanok near the condo, agreed to pay her 1,000 baht, and brought her upstairs.
He alleged that when she told him she was menstruating, he offered only 500 baht — leading to a dispute. He then claimed she produced a knife and threatened him, and that he grabbed her throat in self-defence, causing her death.
He admitted to placing her body in the suitcase and dumping it at the scene, before returning to pack his belongings and leaving for Suvarnabhumi.
Police say Carman had visible scratch marks on his arms and neck at the time of his arrest, which he attributed to an insect bite. Colonel Sarathongyu noted the marks were "consistent with a struggle."

Charges and legal consequences
Carman has initially been charged with abducting a minor under 18. Investigators say murder charges are expected to follow pending full forensic examination of the room, post-mortem findings, and DNA analysis. Had police coordination been delayed by approximately five minutes, authorities say Carman's flight would have departed.
In Thailand, murder carries a maximum penalty of death or life imprisonment.
