A 28-year-old man died allegedly by suicide after falling from the 43rd floor of the Supernova Spira skyscraper in Noida, a satellite city of New Delhi, India, on Saturday, 3 October, police said. He had checked into a short-term rental in the building alone the previous day.

The man was identified as Sambhav Jain, a resident of Manesar. The Indian Express reported that he was 29 and a resident of Gurgaon, another city in the Delhi metropolitan region.

Police received a call about the incident at around 11.30am. Jain had reportedly booked a room online and checked into the high-rise alone on Friday for a short rental stay.

He arrived at around 3pm and was staying at an Airbnb in the Spyra building for one day.

Supernova Spira is part of Supertech's Supernova project in Sector 94, Noida, near the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and close to the Okhla Bird Sanctuary station of Delhi Metro's Magenta Line.

Witnesses tried to intervene

An air-conditioning repair team was working in a nearby flat before the incident when its members saw Jain hanging from a balcony railing. They tried to save him, but he eventually jumped from the 43rd floor.

A purported video of the incident shows people on the balcony appearing to attempt to prevent Jain from falling. Another distressing video shows him standing on the outer ledge of the high-rise balcony as people on the ground watched and recorded the situation.

Bystanders could reportedly be heard urgently calling security and discussing Jain's position, including saying that he had climbed beyond the railing on an upper floor.

Police said Jain jumped from the balcony with the intention of dying by suicide. He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. India Today reported that the impact was so severe that his body was split into two parts.

Police examine financial difficulties

A preliminary inquiry found that Jain had reportedly been experiencing stress linked to financial problems, according to police.

Jain had been messaging his father for several days, telling him that he did not want to live anymore. He had also not returned home for several days and had reportedly been staying at different places before checking into the short-term rental.

Information emerging during the initial inquiry indicated that Jain was reportedly troubled by debt and under significant financial pressure. A chat with his father was also reportedly found.

People who were in the area at the time of the incident told police that Jain appeared to have been under mental stress, the officer said.

Investigation continues

Police took the body into custody and prepared the required documentation before post-mortem proceedings began. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination.

Police officers and a forensic team inspected the scene and collected evidence. Investigators are also examining CCTV footage from the building and surrounding areas.

A detailed investigation is underway, with police examining all aspects of the incident. Jain's family has been informed and further legal proceedings are being carried out.

The exact circumstances and reason behind his death remain under investigation.
