Four killed, including family of three, in 11-vehicle crash on Malaysia’s East Coast Expressway
Four people, including a family of three returning from Malaysia’s National Day celebrations in Putrajaya, were killed after a tanker lorry crashed into traffic, triggering an 11-vehicle collision on the East Coast Expressway near Temerloh, Pahang.
MALAYSIA: Four people were killed and four others injured after a tanker lorry crashed into traffic on the East Coast Expressway 1 (LPT1) near Temerloh, Pahang, on Sunday night (31 August), triggering a collision involving 11 vehicles.
The crash occurred at KM110.4 of the Kuantan-bound carriageway.
The vehicles involved were two Proton Sagas, two Perodua Myvis, a Toyota Alphard, an express bus, a Proton S70, a tanker lorry, a Honda CR-V, a Toyota Hilux and a Perodua Aruz.
According to the Pahang Fire and Rescue Department, the department received an alert at 10.44pm, with first responders arriving at the scene at about 11.24pm.
Four victims killed, four injured
Pahang Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director Salahuddin Isa said three occupants of the Proton S70 — its male driver, a female passenger and a child — died at the scene.
A man travelling in the Honda CR-V was also killed.
Four other people were injured. They included two men who were trapped in the tanker lorry and the CR-V, a woman in the Toyota Hilux and a man in one of the Proton Sagas.
The remaining people involved in the crash escaped unharmed, including all 30 passengers on the express bus.
The injured victims were handed over to Malaysia’s Ministry of Health for medical treatment, while the bodies of those killed were handed over to police.
Family killed while returning from National Day celebrations
The three family members travelling in the Proton S70 were believed to have been returning from Putrajaya after celebrating Malaysia’s National Day.
Nur Atiqah Sofiya, 32, her husband Muhammad Nazatul Nazmi, 32, and their four-year-old son Muhammad Armaan Nazeef were killed in the crash.
Nur Atiqah’s father, 59-year-old Mohd Kazwan Mohd Kassim, said it was the first time the family had celebrated National Day in Putrajaya.
The fourth fatality was 55-year-old Seow Beng Wain, a passenger in the Honda CR-V, from Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam, Selangor.
Rescue operation causes traffic disruption
A total of 21 firefighters from the Mentakab, Temerloh and Karak Fire and Rescue Stations took part in the rescue operation.
The operation was brought under control at 2.48am and fully concluded at 2.50am.
The crash caused traffic congestion stretching about 7.2 kilometres, from KM109.2 to KM116.4, affecting the Lanchang-to-Temerloh stretch of the expressway.
