Bogo City sinkhole remains under monitoring as geological findings awaited

A reported sinkhole in Bogo City, Cebu, Philippines, remains under restricted access as authorities await a geological assessment to determine the cause, depth and underground extent of the ground opening.

The opening was reported in Purok Indilicio, Barangay Guadalupe, where the city government has cordoned off the area and imposed a 20-metre safety perimeter as a precaution.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) responded on Friday, 21 August 2026, to inspect the area and implement safety measures.

A technical team from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) subsequently inspected the site on Saturday, 22 August, together with CDRRMO personnel and Barangay Guadalupe officials.

As of Sunday, 23 August, the MGB had not released its technical findings. Authorities were awaiting its assessment of the opening's cause, depth, underground extent and surrounding soil conditions.

Initial observations and continuing monitoring

The city government initially estimated the opening at around 15 metres in extent. It stressed, however, that this was an initial observation and did not constitute a final geological determination that the feature was a sinkhole.

Authorities have continued monitoring the site while awaiting the MGB's technical assessment and recommendations.

Residents and members of the public have been prohibited from approaching or entering the cordoned-off area. They have also been instructed not to remove or move caution tape and other safety barriers.

The disposal of garbage, soil, rocks or other debris into the opening has likewise been prohibited.

Barangay officials, including barangay watchmen or tanods, have been involved in monitoring the area and are expected to report changes observed around the opening.

The restrictions are intended to reduce the risk to people while authorities determine whether the surrounding ground remains unstable.

Nearby houses monitored

Three houses are located near the reported opening, according to the city government. One of the houses is currently occupied.

The homes are outside the designated 20-metre setback, but the local government has nevertheless encouraged the occupied household to consider preemptive evacuation as a precaution.

Authorities have stressed that the safety measures could be adjusted depending on developments at the site and the findings of the geological assessment.

The city government has also asked nearby residents to report any changes they observe.

Earlier reports described continuing ground movement around the opening, prompting concern that the affected area could expand.

GMA Network reported that residents were alarmed after a loud crashing sound woke people in the area. Residents subsequently discovered that part of the ground had collapsed.

Several coconut trees reportedly fell into the opening following the collapse.

Resident Fritz Ermac described the opening as deeper than he had expected and said the ground appeared to continue collapsing. He compared the sensation to experiencing an aftershock.

Bogo CDRRMO Operation and Warning Officer Glenn Ursal said authorities were closely monitoring the area because the ground was continuing to collapse.

Ursal said residents could be evacuated if the opening continued to expand.

He also said the city government would submit a report to the MGB so the agency could assist and assess the situation. At that stage, the cause remained under investigation.

Geological causes remain unconfirmed

Geological information cited by the city government and reported by local media explains that sinkholes can occur in areas containing limestone or other carbonate rocks.

In such environments, groundwater can gradually dissolve rock beneath the surface, creating underground cavities.

When sufficient underground support is lost, the surface can subside or collapse.

The city government has emphasised that this geological process has not been established as the cause of the reported opening in Barangay Guadalupe.

The MGB's assessment is therefore expected to provide the technical basis for determining what occurred beneath the surface.

Other possible contributors to sinkhole formation include human activities, according to geological information cited in the reports.

These can include excessive groundwater extraction, mining, drainage problems and damaged pipes.

The precise cause cannot be established until the relevant geological assessment is completed.

Safety precautions remain in place

While the technical assessment is pending, authorities have maintained the 20-metre restriction around the opening.

The public has been told not to approach or enter the restricted area, conduct activities nearby, or interfere with the barriers established around the site.

Authorities have also prohibited dumping material into the opening, including garbage, soil, rocks and other debris.

The precautions reflect concerns that ground surrounding a newly formed opening may remain unstable and could potentially collapse further.

GMA Network reported that authorities were also monitoring a 10-metre danger zone around houses near the opening during the initial response.

Subsequent city government measures established a 20-metre safety perimeter, with residents and the public instructed to remain at least that distance from the opening.

The city government continues to coordinate with the CDRRMO, MGB and Barangay Guadalupe officials while monitoring continues.

Authorities have advised residents to follow official instructions and report any changes around the site rather than approaching the opening themselves.
